Iron Lady

Irom Chanu Sharmila is an incredible woman. An Imphal based poet, she is now in her tenth year of an indefinite hunger strike demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

Since November 4, 2000 when she began her fast, she has been detained, released and re-arrested innumerable times by the government and force-fed through nasal tubes, but has stood by her demand, steadfastly refusing to eat until the draconian Act is totally repealed.

The "Gandhi to Sharmila Campaign” has a single point agenda.

No more AFSPA. Nowhere in the country.

On Saturday 13 March 2010, there will be an evening of Speech, Music and Poetry by the VOICES OF RESISTANCE AGAINST THE ARMED FORCES SPECIAL POWERS ACT in solidarity with the 'From Gandhi to Sharmila' Campaign at the K C, Open Air Theatre, JNU Campus, New Delhi, 5:30 pm onwards.

Music by: Dhruv Sangari, Aahat, Wild Leaves, Tibetan Students' Forum and others

Poetry readings by: Burning Voices, Deeptipriya Mehrotra, Ikhlaq A. Khan, Brijesh Kumar, Muntazir Qayam, Samar Pandey, Ponni Arasu and others

Speeches by: H S Shiva Prasad, Kamal Mitra Chenoy, Gautam Navlakha, Usha Ramanathan, Bhagat Oinam, Amrapali Basumatari, Naga Students Union, Tibetan Student's Forum and others

The AFSPA is a single page legislation that empowers the central government to deploy armed forces in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, as well as Jammu & Kashmir, and empowers security officers to:-

  • Shoot-to-kill anyone on mere suspicion
  • Arrest anyone without warrant and detain for unaccountable periods of time
  • Search and seize on anyone’s premises without warrant, and
  • Grants immunity to Armed Personnel from Enquiry or Trial

There is much that is wrong with such an Act. Especially how it is applied. Come to KC on the 13th and participate in the debate! Bring your friends too!
